The Bradford Police Museum is honoured to have recently received a fascinating collection of memorabilia belonging to Sergeant Cecil Henry Hailstone of the former West Riding Constabulary.

Sgt. Hailstone’s career was one of dedication and distinction. Joining the force in 1935, he served in various roles before being promoted to Sergeant. His quick thinking and leadership during a severe Yorkshire blizzard in the 1950s earned him the British Empire Medal - a testament to his courage in challenging conditions. Later, his skills took him overseas, where he served with the Cyprus Police Force during a turbulent period, contributing to both road safety training and riot control.

This generous donation, kindly gifted by his family, includes medals, photographs, documents, and other personal artefacts that together tell an extraordinary story of service both at home and abroad. The items will form part of a forthcoming temporary exhibition, where visitors will be able to see items belonging to Sgt. Hailstone on display in greater detail - including a very special letter from Downing Street in relation to his British Empire Medal.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Sgt. Hailstone’s family for ensuring these pieces of history will be preserved and shared with future generations.
