About the event
Step into the shadowed streets of Victorian Bradford, where crime, punishment, and scandal were part of everyday life.
On this guided walking tour through the city centre, you’ll visit real locations linked to 19th-century crimes - places where murders were committed, thieves were caught, and lives were quietly ruined. Led by an expert museum guide, the tour uncovers stories drawn from original records, revealing the harsher realities of Victorian life and justice.
Hear about Bradford’s own great train robbery, the case of three boys convicted of stealing crows in Wibsey, and Black Toppin, arrested for sheep theft in Westgate. You’ll also explore the disturbing death of Esther Neal, found above her corset shop on Darley Street, and uncover who was believed to be responsible. From notorious cases to forgotten crimes, this walk reveals a darker side of Bradford’s past - told in the very streets where it unfolded.
What to Expect
The Victorian Crime Scene Walking Tour is a guided outdoor walk through Bradford city centre, focusing on real crimes from the 19th century. Your guide will lead you between key locations, sharing stories of murders, robberies, and unusual criminal cases drawn from historical records. Each participant will be provided with an audio device, so you won’t miss any of the commentary as you walk.
The tour is a gentle stroll lasting approximately 90 minutes, which both starts and finishes at The Bradford Police Museum.
Please Note
There are no toilet facilities within the museum, so we recommend using the public toilets in City Park before your visit. As the tour takes place outdoors, comfortable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. In the event of adverse weather, the museum does provide umbrellas. Our museum volunteers will be on hand throughout your visit and are always happy to help with any questions.
